One-way flow:When the pump starts, a vacuum (negative pressure) is created in the suction pipe. The liquid pressure outside the foot valve forces open the valve core, allowing liquid to flow smoothly into the pipe.
Backflow prevention: When the pump stops, water in the suction pipe may attempt to flow back to the source due to gravity. At this time, the valve core quickly closes under its own weight and the backflowing water, pressing tightly against the valve seat to form a seal, thus preventing backflow.
Maintaining a full pump body:Because backflow is prevented, the pump casing and suction pipe remain fully filled with water. This state is known as priming.
3.Replacement (judgment, steps and precautions)
When is replacement necessary?
The brass foot valve may need replacement in the following situations:
* The pump fails to draw water or has difficulty drawing water: Water takes a long time to come out after starting, or no water comes out at all.
* Water flows back quickly after the pump stops: A sound of water flowing back into the pipe can be heard.
* Water must be reprimed every time it is started: This is the most typical sign of foot valve failure.
* Signs of damage: After removing the foot valve from the water source, the valve core is found to be stuck, the seal is broken, or the brass valve body is cracked.
Replacement steps
* Safety first: Always disconnect the power to the pump! Ensure the pump cannot start accidentally.
* Shut down the water source: If possible, isolate the water source, such as by closing the valve before the wellhead or removing the pump from the water source.
* Release pressure: Open the vent valve on the pump or pipe to release the pressure in the pipe.
* Remove the old foot valve: If the foot valve is installed at the bottom of the well or in deep water, the entire suction pipe needs to be pulled out one section at a time.
* Use pipe wrenches or a wrench to loosen the connection between the foot valve and the suction pipe. Note: Loosen in the opposite direction (usually counterclockwise).
Cleaning and Inspection: Clean any old Teflon tape or debris from the water pipe connection. Inspect the end of the suction pipe for damage.
Installing the New Foot Valve: Wrap Teflon tape clockwise around the threads of the new foot valve or apply pipe thread sealant (ensure to use the type suitable for drinking water).
Hand-screw the new foot valve into the suction pipe, then tighten it with a tool. Do not overtighten to avoid damaging the threads or valve body.
Ensure the filter screen (if any) at the bottom of the foot valve is clean.
Reinstallation: Carefully place the suction pipe with the new foot valve back into the water source, ensuring the foot valve is submerged sufficiently below the water surface and a certain distance from the bottom (to prevent the intake of sediment).
Resumption and Testing: Restore power and attempt to start the water pump to observe whether it can draw water normally and quickly.
Precautions
Correct Direction: Pay close attention to the water flow direction during installation. There is usually an arrow on the valve body indicating this; ensure the arrow points towards the water pump.
Matching Specifications: When purchasing a new foot valve, ensure its thread size perfectly matches your suction pipe.
Filter: Many foot valves come with a coarse filter to block large particles. This filter is important if your source water has high levels of impurities.
Alternative Materials: Besides brass, foot valves are also available in plastic, stainless steel, and other materials. Choose the appropriate material based on the corrosiveness of the medium and the operating pressure. Brass is a very balanced and common choice for both domestic and general industrial water use.
